Pricing

The editing fees in the tables below are a guide only. An individual quote will be tailored to the complexity
or simplicity of your document, the specifics and extent of the editing services you require, and current exchange rates.

For example, you may wish to have your text edited for clarity of expression and logic in the arguments but not need an editor’s attention to correct grammar and punctuation; or you may desire the editor to check the presentation of the data in table cells and figures but to ignore the tablesdesign and formatting. The fee can
be reduced accordingly.

International Clients

The fees are presented here in Australian dollars. For international clients, however, fees will typically be charged in the client’s local currency (or a different currency, if desired).

Quotations in over 20 currencies can be readily supplied, with payments receivable directly in
those currencies.

Nongraded Work (Faculty, Institutional and Commercial)

For nongraded projects (such as academic journal articles or book chapters, museum catalogues, site reports and press releases), I charge by the word, or by the hour (usually for those orders where word count is not directly pertinent), or by a combination of the two.

For works charged partially or fully by the hour, I will agree a capped number of hours or a capped fee with you before commencement of the project.

For unusually simple or unusually complex orders, I will negotiate a fee with you on a per-project basis.

Graded Work (Student Essays, Dissertations, Theses, etc.)

Student work attracts a lower fee in recognition of students’ typically restricted incomes and in keeping with the more limited scope of editing permissible under the Guidelines for Editing Research Theses (2019) set by Australia and New Zealand’s Institute of Professional Editors and approved by the Australian Council of Graduate Research.

Extra Charges

Australia’s consumption tax, known as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), is currently not charged.

Two Lands will endeavour to absorb the client’s SWIFT fees and currency exchange surcharges
wherever possible.

Please note that proofreading will not address the correct use of English idiom. For this reason, proofreading is not suitable for ESL (English as a second language) documents.

Short Deadlines

There is no extra charge for short turnarounds on your order, whether graded or nongraded work.

Revisions, Additions and Second Drafts

Editing or proofreading of second drafts of a document previously edited by me are charged at a 50% discount to the original per-word or per-hour fee and are charged only on the word count of the redrafted sections (which might extend to the whole document or be as small as a paragraph). This second edit/proofread will check against the previous copy for discrepancies and ensure that all amendments suggested in the first edit have been accurately incorporated by the client.

Additions and wholly new substituted sections, or a thorough reworking outside the scope of the original
brief, will incur an additional full-fee charge (based only on the word count of the added/substantially modified sections).

Sample for New Clients

Not sure if editing is something you need? A 500-word sample at a flat fee of A$50 is available to all prospective clients. It covers a range of sections and text types (e.g., title, headings, text body, and references) and editorial concerns (e.g., lucid phrasing, clearly articulated arguments, smooth paragraph transitions, correct grammar and spelling, and consistent typographical treatment) pertinent to your particular document to allow you to judge the difference editing makes to your work. Almost all documents, whether in native English or ESL (English as a second language), improve substantially with editing. This fee is deducted from the total fee if you commission the full edit.
